The Kiyomasa Shrine in Kamigawara-cho is said to be the site of the former residence of Kiemon, the uncle of the Sengoku period warlord Kato Kiyomasa. When Kiyomasa was a child, a group of bandits broke into his uncle’s house where he was staying and stole a wicker basket. Kiyomasa, who knew that a demon mask was kept in the house, put the mask on and hid inside the basket. Unaware of this, the bandits reached the outskirts of town, opened the lid, and a demon with a huge mouth and red face appeared from inside, causing them to flee in surprise. This anecdote is recounted, and a shrine and monument were erected in 1885 (Meiji 18). The shrine still houses this demon mask and holds the Oni Matsuri (Demon Festival), a city-designated intangible folk cultural property.
