Founded around 1429–1440 (15th century), reportedly by Hattori Iga-no-Kami Munemune (or a family member). Ungo-ji served as the family temple (bodai-ji) of the Hattori clan especially Hattori Koheita who served Oda Nobunaga.

He is famous for striking the first spear (ichiban-yari) against Imagawa Yoshimoto during the Battle of Okehazama in 1560 — a decisive moment that helped Nobunaga’s surprise victory.
